Sarah Geronimo was quick to defend fellow singer Charice from bashers, stating that it’s unfair for other people to bash the international singing sensation just because her self-expression defies what the society expects of her. “We have to respect her, hindi dahil si Charice Pempengco siya kundi dahil tao siya. Bawat isa [sana mag] respetuhan, tama na, pabayaan na natin si Charice,” [“We have to respect her, not because she is Charice Pempengco but because she is a human being. I hope everyone should respect each other, please stop, let's leave Charice alone."
], said the Popstar Princess in an interview with Push.com.ph and other ABS-CBN entertainment reporters.
Charice is persistently plagued with intrigues as photos of her new hair color and tattoos have been going viral on the Internet, fueling speculations about her rumored lesbian preferences. To which Sarah replied, “Alam mo ang magagawa lang naman natin para sa kanya is to pray for her. Wala naman tayo sa posisyon para masabi kung ano ang tama o mali para sa kanya. Basta tayo magdasal tayo kung ano yung the best para sa personal na buhay niya at singing career niya.” ["You know the only thing that we can do is to pray for her. We are not in the position to say what is right or wrong for her. Let's just pray for what's best for her personal life and singing career."
Likewise, Charice’s mom, Raquel, recently stated in an interview that she would support her daughter should she decide to confirm that she’s a lesbian in public. “Ang sinasabi ng puso ko at isip ko bilang ina ay hayaan ko siyang ilantad kung ano ang tunay na katauhan niya. Kung ano ang gusto niya, dahil doon siya magiging maligaya,” ["What my heart and mind is telling me as a mother is to allow her to reveal her real gender preference. Whatever path she wants to take, because that is where she would find happiness."
], Raquel reportedly told ABS-CBNNews.com last Friday, May 10.
On a different note, Sarah lightened things up as she pointed out that she herself had trouble finding her own identity. Asked if she remembered going through an awkward stage, she cheerfully answered, “Awkward stage ko ito ngayon. Ngayon ko pa lang pina-find myself. Ngayon ko lang iniisip kung anong gusto ko para sa buhay ko. Ito yung quarter life crisis, yung may marami kang tanong.” ["This is now my awkward stage. It's only now that I'm finding myself. Only now that I'm thinking of what I want for my life. This is the quarter life crisis where you have many questions."
As it is, living such a sheltered life also makes her wonder what it’s like to be responsible for her own decisions. “Kailangan na. 25 years old na po ako. Kailangan maging independent,” ["It's needed. I'm already 25 years old. I need to be independent."
], she beamed.
