MANILA, Philippines—CNN host/reporter Anna Coren agreed it was truly “more fun in the Philippines” just like what the country's tourism slogan says.
Coren, host of the morning news program ‘World Report’, is in the Philippines for a week to visit several areas, particularly Manila, Batangas, and the province's Taal Lake.
During the week-long special “Eye on the Philippines”, which Coren will also present, the Philippine Department of Tourism also rolled out its international commercials on CNN for its latest campaign.
Although Coren has been to the Philippines at least four times to cover some of the big events, what she remembers the most is her interview with the then very young Charice Pempengco in Laguna.
Coren admitted that she loved Charice and was impressed that such a small girl could have a big voice.
“Charice is a dynamite, she is a dynamite!” Coren told News 5 and InterAksyon in an interview in Makati Shangri La, recounting her first coverage in the Philippines.
Since then, she has been to the country several times to watch the dancing inmates of Cebu give a riveting tribute to the King of Pop Michael Jackson in 2009 and the bloody Quirino Grandstand hostage crisis in 2010.
“We thought it would be resolved quickly,” Coren said, recalling her 2010 coverage. “Twenty minutes later, gunshots were heard.”
Coren also recently interviewed President Benigno Aquino III for one and a half hours for “Talk Asia” and said she was grateful that Aquino was “generous with his time.”
“He knows the challenges facing him without a doubt,” Coren said. “It was very interesting and very inspiring for the one hour and a half that we spoke with him.”
Coren admitted that she was excited about hunting the best Pinoy dishes she’s heard about. “I’ll definitely try adobo,” she said. “The balut, well, let’s see.”
Eye on the Philippines began airing Monday and will end with a half-hour program featuring the highlights of the week on May 4 to 6.
