ASPIRING musical sensations from all over the Visayas gathered at the Lapu-Lapu City Hoops Dome on May 16 and 17 as upcoming singing competition The X Factor Philippines held the Visayas leg of its nationwide live auditions.

The performers that trooped to the dome were already the selected ones from the pre-screening done last year in the key cities and towns around the region. There was a turnout of 80 hopefuls, who all faced the scrutiny of the show’s judges Pilita Corales, Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano and Charice.

In the press conference held the day before, Asia’s Queen of Songs Pilita said they are “looking for the person who can be a world-class entertainer, and someone who will sell records and fill theaters.”

“We’re looking for the person who’s going to replace all of us,” Martin quipped.

Selected performers from the Visayas auditions will then have a face-off with other aspirants from Luzon and Mindanao. The final round-up will be divided into four categories: young female, young male, group, and over 30.

Apart from battling it out, the show’s finalists will also have the opportunity to be mentored by the judges themselves, as per the show’s format. Each judge will be assigned to one category of finalists, to whom they will impart the voice and stage lessons they have mastered over the years.

The show’s host KC Concepcion commented: “It’ll be exciting to see the competition among the four judges as well.”

“It’ll be exciting to see what these people, with so much experience, bring to the show,” she added. “Contestants will be mentored by these judges and even if they don’t win, they can bring these (lessons) with them.”

The youngest among the mentor-judges, 20-year-old Charice, said it will be an “interesting but fun” experience should she be assigned to mentor contestants who are older than she is. She said, “They’ll learn from me, and I’ll learn from them.”

A finalist of a singing competition herself, Charice’s advice was: “Emotions are important for beautiful singing. Kahit anong simple na kanta, as long as there are emotions, that’s what’s important.”

The X Factor Philippines is a franchise of the hit UK reality singing contest created by renowned judge Simon Cowell. It will air on June 23 at ABS-CBN.
