Stand-up comedian shines on 'X Factor' week 2

MANILA, Philippines -- A gay stand-up comedian stood out among the many hopefuls on the second week of ABS-CBN's newest talent search "The X Factor Philippines."

With his hard rock performance of "Let The Body Set The Floor" from the band Drowning Pool, 31-year-old Jeffrey "Osang" Soliven drew a wild reaction from the audiences, who asked the contestant to do an encore. He obliged and sang Shaggy's "Mr. Boombastic."

The show's judges Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano, Pilita Corrales and Charice were all praises for Soliven, lauding his strong vocals.

"This is the strangest thing I'm going to say. You come out here and you talked and act like any other gay person would but when you perform you are 100% man. Sa lahat ng mga nag-audition 'yung boses mo and talent is the most versatile," Nievera said.

"Where have you been all our lives? You are total performer, total entertainer, a great singer," Nievera added.

Soliven was pleased with the judges'; comments. "Sobrang saya grabe, abot hanggang langit," Soliven said after his audition.

Crying time

After a contestant brought Charice to tears last week, it was Nievera's turn to get emotional this week.

Las Vegas student Heley Vanessa Bayot, 18, said she returned to Manila to pursue her dream to become a singer.

Bayot then sang "Kahit Isang Saglit," which was recorded by Nievera, dedicating the song to her biological father, who died of cancer when she was only 3-year-old.

Nievera couldn't help but get teary eyed as Bayot got four "yesses" from the judges.

Reunion of sorts

Meanwhile, Charice had a reunion with some of her competitors from talent contests she had joined before becoming an international singing sensation.

Katrina Velarde, Alyssa Quijano and a certain Eric of the group El Canta all got the approval of Charice and are moving on in the competition.

The other contestants who are through to the next round are:

* Jelliane Rose Dinorog, who performed Beyonce's "Run The World (Girls)"

* Ashley Campbell, who sang Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind"

* John Montera, a businessman from Cebu, who performed Valenciano's hit "Take Me Out Of The Dark”

* The all-girl-group 5th Avids, who shone with their performance of Mary Mary's "Shackles (Praise You)"

* Noel Cosca Jr., a freelance singer from Australia, who performed the Al Green classic "Let's Stay Together"

* Gabriel Maturan from Dapitan City who sang Jason Mraz's hit "I'm Yours."

* Jet Barrum 23, with her performance of Fantasia Barrino's "I Believe"

* Theater performer Fred Lo, 19, who sang Bugoy Drilon's "Paano Na Kaya"

* Band vocalist Jerriane Mae Templo, 21, who performed Adele's "Rolling in the Deep"
